🥞 Classic French Toast Recipe

Ingredients (for 2 servings):

* 4 slices of thick bread (brioche or challah works best, but any bread is fine)
* 2 large eggs
* ½ cup milk (whole, almond, or oat)
* 1 tsp vanilla extract
* ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
* 1 tbsp sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
* Butter or oil for frying
* Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fruit for topping

Instructions:**

1. **Make the batter**

* In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar until smooth.

2. **Dip the bread**

* Place each bread slice in the mixture for 10–15 seconds per side, letting it soak but not get soggy.

3. **Cook**

* Heat a nonstick pan or skillet over medium heat and add a little butter.
* Cook each slice for about 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.

4. **Serve**

* Stack on a plate, drizzle with maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and add fruit or whipped cream if you like.

* Day-old or slightly stale bread works best (it absorbs the custard without falling apart).
* Try stuffing the bread with cream cheese or Nutella for a richer version.
* For savory French toast, skip sugar and cinnamon, add a pinch of salt and pepper, and top with cheese, ham, or avocado.
