How to brew the perfect cup of tea

1. Choose Quality Tea

The foundation of a great cup of tea is high-quality leaves or tea bags. Loose leaf tea generally offers better flavor and aroma because the leaves are larger and less processed. Choose the type you prefer:

* **Black tea** (robust, malty, bold)
* **Green tea** (fresh, grassy, delicate)
* **White tea** (light, subtle, floral)
* **Oolong tea** (complex, partly oxidized, fragrant)
* **Herbal tea** (naturally caffeine-free infusions of herbs, flowers, or fruits)

2. Measure the Right Amount

* For **loose leaf tea**: about **1 teaspoon per 8-ounce cup**.
* For **tea bags**: usually 1 bag per cup.
* If you prefer stronger tea, add more leaves—not more steeping time (oversteeping makes tea bitter).

3. Use Good Water

Tea is mostly water, so quality matters. Use **fresh, filtered water** if possible. Avoid water that’s been sitting too long or previously boiled, since it can taste flat.
4. Heat Water to the Correct Temperature

Different teas release their best flavors at different temperatures:

* **Black tea**: 200–212°F (just off a rolling boil).
* **Green tea**: 160–180°F (cooler water prevents bitterness).
* **White tea**: 170–185°F.
* **Oolong tea**: 185–205°F.
* **Herbal tea**: 200–212°F.

Tip: If you don’t have a thermometer, let boiling water sit for 1–2 minutes before pouring over green or white teas.

5. Steep for the Right Time

Steeping time determines flavor and balance:

* **Black tea**: 3–5 minutes.
* **Green tea**: 2–3 minutes.
* **White tea**: 4–5 minutes.
* **Oolong tea**: 4–7 minutes.
* **Herbal tea**: 5–10 minutes.

Remove the tea leaves or bag when done—this prevents bitterness or overly strong flavors.

6. Enhance (Optional)

Enjoy tea plain or add extras:

* **Milk and sugar** (common for black teas like English Breakfast).
* **Honey or lemon** (great with green or herbal teas).
* **Spices** (like cinnamon, cardamom, or ginger for chai).

7. Serve and Savor

Pour into your favorite cup, take in the aroma, and sip slowly. A perfect cup of tea is not only about taste but also about enjoying the moment.
