My Pet Rock Ran Away: A child genuinely believes their pet rock has run away

Here’s a story about a child and their runaway pet rock!

The sun peeked through Lily’s window, casting a warm glow on her favorite corner of the room. But today, the warmth couldn’t chase away the chill of dread that settled in her heart. She scrambled out of bed, her eyes immediately darting to the small, hand-painted box on her nightstand. Empty.

“No, no, no!” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Rocky!”

Rocky was no ordinary rock. He was smooth and gray, with two googly eyes glued on and a vibrant red smile drawn with a permanent marker. Lily had found him on their last family hike and, with the solemnity only a seven-year-old could possess, had declared him her pet. They had adventures daily, from conquering the towering peaks of her toy castle to navigating the treacherous currents of the bathtub.

But now, Rocky was gone.

Tears welled in Lily’s eyes. How could he? After all they’d been through! He must have been unhappy. She remembered yesterday’s incident – she’d accidentally left him on the cold kitchen counter for an hour while she had a snack. Oh, the guilt!

Her parents, hearing the commotion, rushed in. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” her mom asked, her face filled with concern.

“Rocky… Rocky ran away!” Lily wailed, pointing dramatically at the empty box.

Her dad, trying to suppress a chuckle, cleared his throat. “Ran away, honey? Are you sure he didn’t just… roll off?”

“Rocks don’t just roll off, Daddy! He’s a pet! He has feelings! He was sad about the kitchen counter!”

Seeing the genuine distress in their daughter’s eyes, her parents exchanged a look. This was serious.

“Alright, Pumpkin,” her dad said, putting on his most serious detective voice. “Operation: Find Rocky is a go! What’s our first clue?”

Lily, wiping her tears, instantly perked up. This wasn’t a time for sadness; it was a time for action! “He likes warm places! And he loves adventures! He probably went somewhere exciting!”

The search began. Lily, armed with a magnifying glass and a bright pink safety vest, led the charge. Her mom, bless her heart, even printed out “Missing Pet Rock” posters with a hand-drawn picture of Rocky.

They started in the living room. “He might have gone under the sofa,” Lily declared, “looking for dust bunny mountains!”
